Recommended Experiences in Johannesburg

We want you to love Johannesburg just as much as we do

Johannesburg is an amazing city! There are several things that make it a world-class metropolis, for example:

• The city is the world’s largest man-made forest with over 6 million trees lining the streets and parks.
• There is one street in Johannesburg that was home to 2 Nobel Peace Prize winners. Can you guess who they are?
• 40% of the planets human fossils are in our city of gold, making it one of the richest archaeological sites in the world.
• Because it is at a high elevation, it takes one-minute longer to boil an egg in Johannesburg than it does in the coastal cities of Cape Town and Durban.
• Jozi is the birthplace of afro-house Kwaito music, which emerged in the 90s as a vehicle to express the realities of young black South Africans post-apartheid.

At 84 on Fourth Guest House we consider it our pleasure and duty to make sure that you experience the majesty of our city. We’ve put together a list of some of our ‘off the beaten path’ experiences that have been proven to be hits with our guests over the years.

Lebo’s Soweto Bike Tour: Soweto township was a significant site of the anti-apartheid movement, and today it is home to 1,3 million residents in an area of just over 200 square kilometres (that’s nearly 6,400 people per square kilometre). One of the best ways to experience this community is to cruise through it on a bike. You’ll visit interesting historical sites, see Mandela’s house and taste some home brewed beer and local cuisine.

Maboneng Precinct: Over the past few years sections of Jozi’s inner city have been transformed into creative hubs attracting innovation in all sorts of artistic and entrepreneurial ventures, from the culinary to the visual. The Maboneng Precinct is one such example, the Sunday Arts on Main Market is a perfect way to tap into the creative energy in the city where you’ll get to taste a variety of delicacies at the food market, take in incredible views from the rooftop bars and peruse through locally-made products. The city is bustling with people putting interesting social and cultural innovations into action.

Dlala Nje Walking Tours: Dlala Nje is a social enterprise that offers unique walking tours of the inner city. The profits from the tours go towards funding an inner city community centre aimed at providing a safe learning environment for children from underprivileged backgrounds. Their Hillbrow tour will take you to the infamous Ponte Tower and the Taste of Yeoville Tour includes a culinary experience featuring food from South Africa, Cameroon and the Congo.

Melville: 84 on Fourth is located in the neighbourhood of Melville whose main road is covered in locally owned restaurants, shops and bars. If you want the best pizza in Johannesburg, it is only a couple of steps away from our front door. If you’re a nature lover then you might want to take a walking tour through the historic Melville Koppies, a nature reserve to countless bird and plant species. Or perhaps you’re into cocktails, fresh bread, vintage clothing? Not to worry, we have it all. We have no doubt that by the time you leave, you’ll be a regular in one of the local stops.

These are just a few of the ideas we have in store for you. Depending on what type of experience you would like to have we are here to help you tap into everything that Johannesburg has to offer. If you would like us to create a tailor-made itinerary for you, we would be more than happy to do so!

Love,
Zorana and the Team at 84 on Fourth
